The 27 of May 1798 and the rebellion in Wexford, begun 4 days before, is taking its first bloody turn. Inspired and led by the Priests Fathers John and Michael Murphy the rebel army occupies the slopes of Oulart hill, which commands the surrounding countryside. Between 500 and 600 rebels, mainly armed with pike, but including a small number of small arms, await the arrival of the Government forces in the shape of the North Cork militia and some Yeomanry cavalry, 110 men in all.
Taking advantage of the ground some of the Wexford men prepare ambushes while others lure the militia into a precipitous advance. Closing with a seemingly demoralised enemy the militia is surprised by an unseen fusillade and in their confusion is flanked by an aggressive formation of pike armed rebels. Overwhelmed and routed in close combat, something for which they are poorly trained, 105 of them fall victim to the insurgents.

The rebellion, even with initial outstanding successes such as Oulart Hill was doomed by swift Government reaction and the failure of the French to land sufficient troops.
The motley appearance of the army, in its mostly rural attire was relieved by rebel volunteers in colourful uniforms of their own creation and stirring flags and banners.
