It is the early evening of the 13 of December 1862, Fredericksburg Virginia, and two survivors of the failed assault on Marye’s Heights confer with a senior officer. One holds aloft the shot torn regimental colour as they stare back at the heights.

That regiment, the 4th Regiment of General Meagher’s Irish brigade, had suffered 160 causalities in the battle. From the five regiments of the brigade, mustering 1,200 men, 545 had failed to return from the Heights. The brigade had advanced up the slope, over the bullet riddled and shell ravaged remains of the four earlier assaulting brigades, at double time coming to within 75 yards of the confederate line. Here they were swept by withering fire, the survivors, seemingly bent forward as if struggling into the face of a fearful nor’easter’, continued to advance.

Closing to within 30 yards of the enemy’s lines, they returned fire but the weight of fire directed at them was too much to bear and in small groups they retired to their lines. The survivors were astonished to hear the confederates cheering them.
As the other regiments of the Brigade were without their green standards that day the posting of the 28 in the centre of the line , their distinctive green regimental standard flying proudly, was Meagher’s way of informing the enemy that they were facing the grim and determined soldiers of the Irish Brigade.
